Professional training year
Gain real-world experience with a placement in Year 3. You can choose from a wide range of organisations in the UK and beyond, from pharmaceutical and biotech companies and hospital laboratories to research institutes and wildlife trusts. Past students have worked for organisations including GlaxoSmithKline and The Environment Agency.
Field courses and summer work and volunteering opportunities also give students hands-on experience of modern technique and practical skills in the field of Biology.
Flexible degree options
At Cardiff School of Biosciences, you can tailor your course to suit your interests. There are five main entry degree subjects (Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Zoology). These share the same first year content, then students select modules in year 2 & 3 in order to specialise or even move to an integrated master’s degree. There is a further option to specialise in Genetics, Anatomy and Physiology.
Prepare for further training
When you finish your undergraduate degree, you may wish to go on to study a PhD or master’s degree, or start a career in a science-related field such as conservation, environmental management, medical research or public health and wildlife management. The transferrable skills you will develop during your degree mean you could also progress to further training in professional areas including teaching, medicine, dentistry, nursing, and veterinary science.
Tailor your degree
Customise your course to match your interests and career aims. With a choice of flexible degree options, you can select specialist modules in years 2 and 3. You’ll also have the option to specialise further in Genetics, Anatomy or Physiology.
93% of graduates were employed and/or in further study, six months after graduating. (DLHE 2016/17). A Biosciences degree opens the door to a career in academia, conservation, medicine, and many other industries.
