What will I study?

You will study a selection of modules, designed to give you a broad knowledge of business management.

As part of the International Year One, you will also study dedicated English language content that is focused on improving your speaking, writing and academic language skills.

The Academic English Skills course teaches students the specific academic language skills they need to develop for success at Cardiff University. The course focuses on receptive (listening and reading) and productive (speaking and writing) skills through practice in semi and authentic task-based activities which build a strong foundation in preparation for each student's future studies. This critical module places particular emphasis on developing academic reading and research skills; research-based writing along with presentation and seminar speaking skills.

This module offers students a thorough understanding of the complexities and dynamics within organisational settings. It delves into key themes, concepts and theories concerning the management of people within an organisation. Throughout the module, the students examine social and psychological aspects of human behaviour within professional settings, thereby helping them with valuable knowledge that can help them navigate the complexities of working with people in various professional settings. 

Marketing is an essential aspect of any business programme, as it equips the students with the required skills and knowledge to excel in the dynamic business world. The modules provide students with a solid foundation for understanding fundamental marketing concepts and being able to apply marketing principles. 

This module is a comprehensive course that delves into the intricate relationship between society and the economy. The course offers students an understanding of how economic systems are influenced by societal factors and vice-versa. The modules also aims to empower students to contribute towards sustainable societies in an ever-changing world.

Effective management is essential for an organisation's success in today's competitive and fast-paced business world. The Management: Theory and Evidence module offers students an evidence-based approach to management theory. 

The module helps students with the required foundation, which enables them to develop practical skills that can be applied in real-world situations. Students will be supported to develop a critical ability to evaluate management theories. The evidence-based approach allows the students to analyse different management aspects and adapt their approach based on the needs of organisations.  

Accounting is an essential subject for every business student regardless of their chosen pathway. The accounting module provides students with a foundation for understanding financial concepts and helps individuals make informed decisions professionally and personally.

Studying the accounting module will benefit students in many ways, from enhancing employability to improving their personal finance management skills.  

Operations management and technology are two interconnected and pivotal facets of any business organisation. In today's rapidly evolving and competitive landscape, where technological advancement is occurring at a striking pace, it is crucial for students to garner a deep understanding of these interlinked domains.

This module empowers students with the requisite problem-solving skills, enabling them to dissect complex situations, make informed decisions, and devise practical solutions, thereby setting a robust foundation for their future careers. Students are acquainted with the role and significance of operations management within the business context, focusing not just on internal operations, but also addressing challenges spread across supply chains.

The module takes a comprehensive approach, evaluating how operations interface with other business functions, thereby offering a more holistic understanding to students. It also considers broader stakeholders, reinforcing the ties between technology, operations, and the larger business ecosystem.
